Crewfare Travel Tips: Carry-on Packing

When you’re traveling to a festival, it can feel like you need to prepare for every possibility–what if it rains? What if I lose my hoody? What will look best in the photos? Before you know it you’ve stuffed your entire closet into an enormous duffel which you are then stuck waiting for at baggage claim and then hauling around a new city. It’s exhausting and not worth it. Don’t worry, we’ve put together some tips for getting everything you need into one airline approved carry-on.

Check the weather ahead of time

You might be traveling from a warm spot to a colder climate or vice versa, so check the weather at your destination to see what you’ll need. Desert festivals don’t usually require rain gear, but an accurate forecast might say otherwise. Save yourself guesswork by packing for the predicted weather.

Do some sole-searching

Shoes take up a ton of space in luggage, so cut down on how many pairs you have to bring. Sadly this means that your most distinctive shoes that only go with one outfit should be left at home in favor of a (still cute) pair that goes with all your clothing. Wear your biggest shoes when you travel–that way you’ll have more space in your suitcase for actual clothing and smaller shoes like flip flops. Pro-tip–stuff socks or other small items inside packed shoes to help them keep their shape without wasting space.

Plan your outfits and look for versatile layers

Instead of packing “options” decide ahead of time what you want to wear and only bring those items. And let’s be real: at a three day festival, you can’t wear the same thing every day. But there might be parts of your outfits that can be reused. A cool vest or jacket won’t get too sweaty and can be worn on the plane as easily as to a venue a few days in a row.

Budget to buy some things on arrival

Often the source of over-packing is fear–what if I lose my sunglasses? What if someone spills a drink on me and I can’t do laundry? What if there’s a hot tub at the hotel and I want to take a dip? So instead of packing like a boy scout–prepared for all possibilities–prepare yourself mentally to solve problems after you arrive. Unexpected rainstorm? Buy a cheap poncho at a drugstore. Colder than you expected? Dash into the nearest clothing store and buy a sweatshirt. Better yet, get some festival merch–functional and commemorative.

Travel-size isn’t just for toiletries

Definitely start with travel-size toiletries–easier for packing, easier for going through the security line at the airport. But keep in mind that certain clothing types pack better than others. Puffer jackets can be squished down way smaller than wool coats. Black leggings can be a good base for any outfit but take up less space than a pair of jeans. Using packing cubes or even gallon size ziploc bags for all your different categories–tops, bottoms, electronics, etc.–keeps your suitcase compressed and organized. No huffing and puffing as you attempt to zip it shut.

Five Can’t-Miss European Festivals in 2023

Traveling to festivals, as you know, is tons of fun. You get to be around some of your best friends, meet new people who share the same interests as you, and have a great time making memories that will last a lifetime. This year, add “international travel” to that checklist. Traveling abroad to festivals adds another layer of awesomeness. You get to expand your horizons, see sights and places you’ve never been before, and generally experience things that are new to younew foods, new cultures, new people. Check out our top European Festivals in 2023.

Wilco Festival in Reykjavik, Iceland – April 3-7, 2023

Wilco has been performing together for over two decades, putting out twelve studio albums that feature their own distinctive brand of rock’n’roll. Whether you identify with their “dad-rock” reputation or not, there’s no denying that their catalog is impressive and they put on a hell of a live show. The Wilco Residency in Iceland is the perfect excuse to go see some living legends perform and then explore one of the most beautiful countries in the world. There’s geysers, natural hot springs, stunning hikes, and a great nightlife scene (required when nights last as long as they do in Iceland). And Crewfare can help you find the perfect place to stay with all your friends!

Croatia Yacht Week – July 23-30, 2023

Croatia is known for its  beautiful, pebbled beaches, scenic towns tucked into coves, and the crystal-clear waters that are perfect for swimming. So what better way to explore the “Pearl of the Adriatic” than by boat? During Croatia Yacht Week, happening this summer during the last week of July, you and your friends can charter a yacht (or find a berth to share) and then spend the week relaxing while your captain takes care of the rest. Each day you’ll travel from port to port, explore Croatia’s historic towns, stop to eat and swim, and then meet up with the other participating yachts for float parties, discos, and more.

Mad Cool Festival in Madrid – July 2023

Since 2016, Mad Cool Festival has featured rock, indie and pop music acts. 2022 featured major names like Metallica, Imagine Dragons, Florence and the Machine, Jack White, and more. Although the dates and headliners are still TBD we know some things will remain the same: venue in sunny Madrid, late Spanish nights, where opening acts don’t even take the stage until the 6pm, and collaborations with local artists, photographers, and fashionistas. In other words, a perfect Spanish holiday.

Oktoberfest in Germany – Sep 16 – Oct 3, 2023

Each year in Germany, Oktoberfest–a celebration of beer and Bavarian culture–is held at the largest fairground in Munich, the Theresienwiese. Oktoberfest dates back over two hundred years and is known for its fun, friendly atmosphere. In between rounds of beer you can explore the rides, sample delicious German food, and listen to live music. Sport the traditional Dirndls or Lederhosen while sharing a round of pints with friends old and new in one of the many beer tents.

Wherever you head this year, don’t forget to check out Crewfare for the best hotel rates, festival tips, travel solutions, and more.

Best Winter Events on the Slopes

Too many people approach winter like a bear: they hole up under as many blankets as possible and simply wait it out. Effective, but boring. Winter doesn’t merely have to be endured. There’s so many fun things to do and places to go. That’s why we thought we’d round up some of our favorite winter events happening all over the world this year.

Open the ski-season at Rise Ski Festival in France – December 10-17, 2022

Ring in the beginning of ski season at Rise Ski Festival, taking place on Europe’s largest skiiable glacier, Les Deux Alpes, in France. This week-long event includes plenty of snow time, yes, but also boasts a ton of musicians, parties, food and wine (this is France, after all). Seasoned shredders will recognize that the Alps are one of the most beautiful places to enjoy the sport. And if you’re a mountain novice, maybe this is your year to learn while taking in truly breathtaking views.

Enjoy some quirky Aspen traditions at Wintersköl – Jan 12-15, 2023

If you like beautiful mountains and fresh, cold air, but don’t need the excuse of skiing or snowboarding to enjoy it, then we definitely recommend Winterskol. Winterskol seeks to celebrate the unique culture of Aspen with events ranging from a soup-making competition among local restaurants to a snow sculpture park. It caps off with a torchlight parade and fireworks on Aspen Mountain.

Watch movies and spot celebrities at Sundance – January 26-29, 2023

The 2023 Sundance Film Festival is taking place from Jan 19 – Jan 29, though what’s considered the Sundance “weekend” will be from the 26-29. Park City is one of the prettiest places to be in winter–sort of like being inside a little snow globe. But enjoying the scenery is just what you do in between movie screenings, panels, and parties. Where else will you get to watch future Oscar winning films, hear from creators and actors, and rub elbows with A-list stars. Try to find a place to stay with a hot tub so you can enjoy the cold winter nights!

Catch the X Games in Aspen, CO – Jan 27-29, 2023

X Games Aspen 2023 is free to attend. You read that right, it’s free to go and watch dozens of the world’s top winter athletes compete in skiing and snowboarding competitions. Whether you like watching slopestyle, slalom, jumps, or half-pipes, the X-games are the original source for some of our favorite winter Olympic sports. Aspen has a great nightlife scene as well, with free shuttle buses keeping you warm as you barhop.

Rock out at Rock the Pistes in France – March 12-18, 2023

Rock the Pistes is an annual music festival featuring live performances from international pop and rock musicians right on the ski slopes of the French and Swiss Alps. In addition to the main performances, there are additional “apres-ski” concerts across the Portes du Soleil Resorts, in both France and Switzerland. Happening in mid-March, this festival is one of the best ways to enjoy winter while celebrating the return of spring.

Party on and off the slopes at Snowboxx Ski Music Festival in France – March 18-25, 2023

If you want to keep the party going after Rock the Pistes, you can always hop over to Avoriaz, France for an extra week of skiing, raving, and exploring at Snowboxx Ski Music Festival. The resort where it’s held is walkable/skiable so you can focus on enjoying world-class slopes, french food, igloo parties, and amazing performances all night.

Rave at the top of the world at Tomorrowland Winter in France – March 18-24, 2023

Tomorrowland hosts a series of music festivals across Europe. Tomorrowland Winter, happening at the top of the Alpe d’Huez, promises an unforgettable experience surrounded by natural beauty. You’ll be able to dance to EDM, check out the otherworldly costumes and get to know your fellow festival-goers who promise to become tomorrow’s best friends.

Laugh it off at Altitude Comedy Festival in Austria – April 3-7, 2023

At altitude, everyone seems funny, including the many up-and-coming comedians performing over the course of a week in Mayrhofen, Austria. The comedy shows at night are the perfect entertainment after a full day of skiing, snowboarding, or just exploring the Mayrhofen glacier that provides a unique setting for laughter and winter fun.

Dance through Winter’s End at Snowbombing in Austria – April 10-15, 2023

Snowbombing is one of the original ski resort festivals, held at the Mayrhofen ski resort in Austria. You can alternately relax, party, ski, and enjoy time with your friends making memories while enjoying the classic Austrian ski culture (BYO Leiderhosen).

Chill out at Zermatt Unplugged in Switzerland – April 11-15, 2023

Zermatt Unplugged is a great festival for music lovers who want to hear a variety of musicians while taking in the iconic view of the Matterhorn in Switzerland. These acoustic performances create an intimate atmosphere amongst the classic Swiss Chalets and rugged mountains. The great part of festivals like Zermatt Unplugged is that you get to experience both the festival and the culture around it. Don’t forget to eat some fondue!

Wherever you head this winter, we hope you’ll be able to bring your crew along with you! All of these events are great places to meet up with friends and make some new memories together.

6 Of The Best Vacation Dining Spots In NYC

Picking a place to eat in NYC can be about as overwhelming as going to a grocery store when you’re hungry.

There are so many options!! But we don’t mess around.

The key to having a great NYC eating experience is to keep things spontaneous but also have some spots picked out.

We like to plan and knock out some of NYC’s best dining spots in the smartest way possible. The goal is to hit the most amazing places with the best atmosphere while we’re here.

So we’re sharing our action plan to get the best food experience. Here are 6 places we have an insane desire to go BACK and eat at again.

*keep reading to get our tips on how to score a table at Lilia which is known for being hard to get a table
**pair these food experiences with your {insert tickets for festival plug} itinerary to get the best NY experience

We love NY!!! You have to try (in no particular order):

For Your Next Brunch:

Fabrique Bakery

Neighborhood: Meatpacking District Type: Swedish global chain bakery

Type: Swedish global chain bakery

Think cinnamon buns, ham and cheese croissants, sourdough bread, and bistro seating.

Do yourself a favor and get the CARDAMOM BUN and let us know if you ever find one better in the world.

The place is so much fun! It’s small with a minimalist look, and white tile and glass interior.

And you won’t need a reservation.

Good Thanks

Neighborhood: Lower East Side
Type: Australian cafe/bakery with brunch staples

LOTS OF HEALTHY OPTIONS (avocado toast, smoothies with collagen). Casual atmosphere, no reservations needed.

Best Damn Dinner Options:

Lilia

Neighborhood: Brooklyn Type: Haute Italian

Type: Haute Italian

ONE OF OUR FAVORITE PASTA PLACES.

The service, ambience, food…A plus. Missy Robin’s is the chef & she just kills it in every way possible.

This is a total special occasion spot, their interior is chic, classic casual. Seriously go!!! It’s the best.

There is also Lilia cafe which is open during the day for brunch.

+ Here’s one major tip. If your goal is to eat here, the best way to snag a table is either to call between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m 718-576-3095 and to set a Notify on resy.com ahead of time. I would add that yes they do accept walk-ins to eat at the bar.

Misi

Neighborhood: Williamsburg Type: Simple Italian Cooking

Type: Simple Italian Cooking

This is Missy Robin’s second location. THEIR PASTAS ARE DIE. They also have the most delicious homemade gelato.

Think clean, white dining room with a view of the Williamsburg Bridge.
+To book a table, use the same tips we recommend for booking at Lilia and call.

Rubirosa

Neighborhood: Nolita
Type: Italian, American classics

HAS THE BEST BUTTER RAVIOLI (AND OBVIOUSLY THE TIE-DYE PIZZA) in the city, in our opinion.

Super casual. Book ahead of time and be prepared for bustling crowds. That or order food to your hotel if you’re looking for a quieter experience.

La Mercerie

Neighbourhood: Soho
Type: Old School French cooking

Their crepes are life changing. THEIR CROISSANTS ARE JUST HEAVEN.

Plus (somewhat of a love story here…): their chef, Marie-Aude Rose married to another chef Daniel Rose, open up restaurants together. This is one of them.

It’s an all-day-cafe (brunch, lunch, and dinner) located inside an upscale artisan furniture shop. Bonus, you can try out all crafted dinnerware and then buy after should you fall in love.

Christmas Bars in NYC with ALL the Holiday Spirits

There’s a reason why so many Christmas movies are set in New York (when they aren’t set in a quaint town upstate, of course)–it just has that holiday magic coursing through it. It has shows and shoppers, window displays, the tourist-packed rink and tree at Rockefeller Plaza, Union Square’s energetic Holiday market…the list goes on and on. So while you’re soaking up the essence of New York, we here at Crewfare recommend really doubling down on holiday cheer. Meet up with your besties at any of these locations, known for their holiday decorations, their Christmas spirit, and their Christmas Spirits.

Lillie’s Victorian Establishment

Instagram post embed: https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cl6Oo0pOlx5/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Lillie’s has two locations–one in Times Square and one in Union Square–but in either location you can count on ornate Victorian excess. High ceilings, decorative columns, and all the walls bedecked with holiday garlands, wreaths and light. If you’re taking in a Broadway show, Lillie’s is a great place to grab delicious but not-too-expensive food on your way to or from the theater. If you’re down by Union Square, it’s still a great place to enjoy the elaborate displays and the joys of your best friends.

Paddy Maguires

A Gramercy Park Ale House where you can play pool, watch sports, and take in all the racing and horse-themed decor gussied up for the holiday season. Paddy’s is a straightforward Irish Pub with a wide selection of beers, cider and spirits. A great place to toast to the holidays with your friends under the twinkle lights and boughs of holly, no reservation required. Pro-tip: even though they don’t have a kitchen, you can order food from nearby restaurants in case you get hungry.

Papillon

Instagram post embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/ClEwHEXvdu2/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

To say Papillon leans hard into the Christmas season in perhaps an understatement. Not content with just a few twinkle lights and a tree, Papillon transforms into a Christmas cavern, with every available surface and wall covered with tinsel, candy canes, stockings, and snowflakes. New York can feel so dark and cold this time of year, but Papillon brings back the warmth and the light, which makes it the perfect place to celebrate with friends over drinks or dinner. Papillon’s food is top notch and they have dedicated and attentive waitstaff, bringing that touch of holiday magic to an everyday gathering. Papillon is located in busy midtown, so make a reservation if you can!

Rolf’s

Instagram post embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/ClmRvXyPQg1/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Rolf’s German Restaurant is positively dripping with holiday cheer–bright twinkle lights, garlands, ribbons, and Christmas ornaments are densely packed across the entire ceiling. You kind of feel like you’re inside the Christmas tree. This restaurant specializes in hearty German fare that is perfect for keeping you warm long after you have to leave a cozy meetup with friends and venture back into the cold. Located by Gramercy park, Rolfs is the perfect place to warm up after you finish up your gift shopping at the Union Square Holiday Market.

Pete’s Tavern

Instagram post embed: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CltZ75pjRm1/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Established in 1864, Pete’s Tavern is a bridge back in time through New York’s history. Its cozy booths and photo-bedecked walls are iconic any time of year, but during the holidays they are also adorned with Nutcracker displays, garlands, lights and general holiday cheer. Pete’s Tavern is a local spot in many ways, where you come with friends for a great burger and a beer, unfussy and focused on the important things–enjoying the holiday with your loved ones.

Oscar Wilde

Instagram post embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/ClgyZ-GOd2b/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Oscar Wilde seeks to channel the spirit of the famed playwright–clever, enjoying beauty, sophisticated and more than a little debaucherous. The bar and restaurant plays with Victorian maximalism–boasting NYC’s longest whisky bar, heavy wooden tables and cabinets, curios and patterned wallpaper. For the holidays they add homey Christmas touches, so it feels as though you’re walking into the happiest parts of A Christmas Carol. Oscar Wilde gets quite crowded and loud, which (in our opinion) amplifies the joy of a shared holiday drink or meal. While the Whiskey bar has obvious appeal, we also recommend trying any of the Gin and Tonics, all inspired by artists of Irish Descent (The Cranberries seem like particularly apropo drink inspo this time of year).

Nothing beats sushi on the water. This upbeat spot serves the freshest fish without the Nobu pricetag.

Luxury Hotels To Escape To With Your Significant Other

With Valentine’s day right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to book a couple’s vacation… especially if you were last minute on those holiday gifts.

So we did a lot of research and created a wish list of the 8 luxury hotels that we want to escape to.

Where we imagine ourselves sleeping in until noon, talking about the future, sipping on cocktails and wine, laying by the pool, being slobs (and also getting all dolled up), and doing absolutely nothing with the person we love.

And now we’re dying to stay at these places.
In no particular order, these 8 splurge-worthy hotels are on our couple’s bucket travel list.

FOUR SEASONS BORA BORA

Located on the island of Bora Bora, French Polynesia

This luxury resort is so major. Get picked up in a boat at the airport, and stay in an overwater bungalow suite. Private beach, spa, and plunge pools. Swim. Unwind. Relax. Connect.

VILLA CORA

Stunning and romantic. Gilded. Frescoes. Subterranean Spa.

This hotel is considered one of the best in the world. Built in the 1860s by a German financier, it overlooks the Boboli Gardens in the hills outside of Florence. Relax in your luxe suit until late morning and then easily head into town later in the day with Villa Cora’s private shuttle service.

Best time to visit: between May and September

SIX SENSE YAO NOI

Located on Yao Noi island in Phuket, Thailand
Barefoot-chic. Take a speed boat to the island and escape to an overwater villa or bungalow. Best time to visit: November to February

HOTEL CAESAR AUGUSTUS

Located on the island of Capri, Italy

We’re dying to explore this spot. This hotel is perched on the edge of a very high cliff. You’ll be able to see the azure blue Bay of Naples, the Vesuvius volcano, the Sorrento Peninsula, Ischia island, and Capri town from your balcony.

Best time to visit: May to October

BADRUTT’S PALACE HOTEL

Located in St. Moritz, Switzerland

Built in 1896 and located in St. Moritz, Switzerland. This one is high on our wish list for winter travel. Why?

It’s definitely THE scenic drive, resort, mountains, and coastline we want to take in with our favorite person.
