Who is Verdy? Meet the Creative Coming to Complexcon

This year’s host is the renowned graphic artist and designer Verdy, the Japanese creative who is approaching world domination with his signature kawaii characters to be seen everywhere from exhibitions, cult streetwear, and unique brand collabs. 

But who is Verdy? Read on for 5 facts about the artist setting the creative direction for this year’s festival.

  1. He is the founder of cult streetwear labels Wasted Youth and Girls Don’t Cry.

Both of Verdy’s brands have shaken up street style worldwide since their launch in 2016 and 2017. Wasted Youth is a skate and punk-inspired clothing brand that sells in pop-up shops and aims to represent the younger generation. Girls Don’t Cry originated as a T-shirt he made as a present for his wife, and grew into a coveted brand from there. 

2. He designed shirts worn by the Paris Saint Germain football team.

Verdy’s signature characters graced the backs of world-famous players including Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, and Neymar as part of a collaboration for PSG’s Japan tour ahead of the 2022-23 season.

3. He’s done brand collaborations with Levi’s, Nike, and even Budweiser.

Verdy is the king of collaborating and has teamed up with giants in the fashion and consumer worlds. He’s created a capsule collection with Levi, designed a skate-inspired pair of trainers for Nike, and launched a limited edition beer bottle to celebrate summer 2022. 

4. He’s had a solo exhibition in Tokyo.

In November 2021 Verdy debuted the solo exhibition RISE ABOVE at the Kaikai Kiki Gallery in Tokyo, owned by legendary Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. It showcased the adorable characters Vick, a punk-rock panda-rabbit, and Visty, a colorful cuddly monster. 

5. He loves LA.

The artist counts Los Angeles as a special place – his first trip here had a huge impact on his career and he’s never looked back. His favorite things about LA? Eating tacos, seeing palm trees, and nights spent meeting different people in bars. We agree, Verdy!

Rolling Loud LA is coming to Hollywood Park for the first time ever from March 3-5 2023. The ​​world’s largest hip-hop festival is bringing fresh and established talent to California, featuring some of the hottest rappers in the game.

Once you’ve booked your ticket and got a sweet deal on a hotel stay, it’s time to start planning your trip. While the full line-up is yet to be announced, you can bet that we’re already thinking ahead to help you find the best places to eat nearby. Check out our list of five top restaurants to refuel at over the weekend below.

Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen

Adolf Dulan is the self-proclaimed “King of Soul Food”, and his neighborhood restaurant in Inglewood is known for its generous portions and great service. Dulan’s signature recipe for fried chicken has been passed down through generations, marinated in a unique spice blend and deep fried ‘til golden. A meal at Dulan’s won’t break the bank either: enjoy an entree, two sides and two cornbread muffins for $14.95 as part of their lunch deal. 

Coni’Seafood

This local treasure could be our favorite because of the drunken shrimp. Open since 1987, Coni’Seafood brings welcoming vibes and the Nayarit-style cooking shines in this unique family establishment.

Stuff I Eat

This plant-based cafe serves up plates of organic deliciousness with a Tex-Mex twist. Founded in 2008, Stuff I Eat was created to bring healthy options to the community and has never looked back. On their menu you can find spicy burritos, creative salads and their signature soul bowls, and there’s even a kids menu for aspiring vegans!

Sunday Gravy

For the best Italian food in Inglewood, visit this small hole-in-the-wall restaurant that serves only local ingredients. This family-run restaurant has been offering up fresh pasta dishes since the 1970s, and the atmosphere reflects their friendly neighborhood vibe. Don’t miss Sunday Gravy’s cheesy garlic bread and pasta alla vodka, washed down with a robust offering of Italian wines. 

Roscoes

Although Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles is a chain, it’s still a California staple. The LA-based soul food restaurant is known for its chicken and waffles and we think it’s the perfect way to end a festival weekend. I mean is there a better hangover cure than waffles?

Five Can’t Miss Restaurants for ETHDenver #BUIDL

ETHDenver is happening from March 2-5, 2023, but Ethereum enthusiasts might find themselves traveling to Denver for the #BUIDL week leading up to the conference. The community-minded cryptocurrency is also organizing a ski trip in the Breckenridge area following the conference. All of this is to say, you might be in Denver for a spell, which means you’ll have plenty of chances to eat.

Map your food tour starting with a hotel near ETHDenver

The conference’s events will mostly be clustered in the artsy RiNO (River North) neighborhood, which is chock-full of cool restaurants, breweries, and bars. ETHDenver has partnered with Crewfare to bring you great deals on your event travel and hotels.

There’s also Thai Ice Cream sandwiches at Melted. Many of the vendors here have their own sit-down restaurants, unlike at Denver Central Market, where the seating is communal.

 Foodies who travel to ETHDenver should be eager to snag a seat at Beckon, which offers fine dining in an intimate space. If you forget to make a reservation, don’t worry, you may be able to find an open chair at its chef’s counter.

They have beer flights so you can find the perfect ale, then walk back to your hotel.
